Scottish Government
Issue- Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy will today publish a White Paper on Scottish government in response to the Calman report. He will make a Commons statement.
Key points
- We have already said that we accept the thrust of Sir Kenneth Calman's report. This White Paper sets out the Government's plans for the next stage of devolution in Scotland, 10 years on. In particular, it details how we will strengthen the financial accountability of the Scottish Parliament to the Scottish people. Jim Murphy said, "In future, if the Scottish Government wants to spend more money, it's going to have to raise it itself, and that's a really strong change in the way in which devolution is organised."
- In the face of global trends we need a stronger Union that can react to the challenges and opportunities of a global world. To choose isolationism, separation or narrow nationalism would be the wrong course.
