Youth Rehabilitation Orders (YROs)

Issue

  • From today, new Youth Rehabilitation Orders (YRO) will allow judges to choose from 18 rigorous options to create a punishment specifically designed to deal with the individual.

Key points

  • As Jack Straw said:

"It is about making offenders pay back to the community they have hurt. We have done this already for adult offenders. Criminals offend against communities as well as individuals and it is right that the community gets some payback. At the moment there are a number of separate orders, whereas this is smarter and stronger. The judge or magistrate can select a series of requirements like a curfew, drug treatment and electronic monitoring. Offending is going down, as is reoffending. This is a continuing effort to improve the way the court, police and probation teams operate as well as dealing with the causes of offending."
