Key points
- It is estimated that 50,000 social rented homes are currently subject to unauthorised subletting. We cannot allow cheats to hang onto the tenancies of council houses they don't need and don't live in; people should feel that the system for housing families who need homes is fairer.
- Amongst the new measures will be new guidance for local authorities recommending approaches such as special investigations teams, photographs on tenancy agreements and £250 rewards (£500 in London) for members of the public who report a suspicious tenancy. DCLG also hope to announce an allocation of £4 million to help councils to implement the guidance.
