UK Funding for Haiti

Issue

  • Haiti earthquake

Key points

  • Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world. After it was hit by a devastating earthquake this week it is facing a major humanitarian crisis. Initial estimates are that some six million people live in the affected area, and one million people in the worst affected area.

  • The UK has already sent vital equipment and trained UK experts to help in Haiti, where they are desperately needed.

  • Today the Labour Government announced a ten million dollar donation to support humanitarian relief work in Haiti. The UK funding will be divided between a number of international agencies and appeals - dictated by an ongoing assessment of need on the ground.
