Economy

Issue

  • Labour is acting to secure growth not choke off recovery.

Key points

  • The Prime Minister said:

"The world and UK economies remain fragile and policymakers around the world and here in the UK must remain vigilant.

"That is why we are all agreed round the world that we must reduce our deficit steadily and with determination, but that we must do nothing this year which would put recovery, growth and jobs at risk here in Britain and in every country. This is the view of all major countries and the IMF ... The biggest mistake we in Britain could make would be to withdraw now from the supportive actions we need for jobs and growth."

  • George Osborne made the wrong judgements on the financial crisis. He opposed our action on Northern Rock; and opposed our help for businesses and families. He threatens to choke off recovery by cutting support for the economy now - and he has no plan for future growth.
