Tobacco

Issue

  • Andy Burnham today publishes a strategy to reduce harm from tobacco.

Key points

  • The aim is to halve the number of smokers by 2020. Every smoker will get help to give up, e.g. by improving referral rates to NHS Stop Smoking Service staff, and more will be done to ensure parents smoking in homes and cars understand the harm it causes to their children.

  • The strategy builds on the tough action already taken by the Government including the ban on smoking in public places, picture warnings on packs, and legislation to ban the display of tobacco in shops and sale of tobacco from vending machines. The number of people smoking has fallen by a quarter in the past decade.
